Residential Campus - Alamogordo

  • The New Mexico School for the Blind and Visually Impaired is currently recruiting for an English Language Arts Teacher of the Visually Impaired.  Duties include the ability to provide a comprehensive educational program to students 6-12 with visual impairments, which may include additional disabilities.  Bachelor’s degree or higher with an endorsement in language arts is required and certification in vision is preferred or be willing to acquire.  Must possess or be eligible for NM Public Education Department licensure.  Will be required to become Braille proficient.  This is a full-time, nine-month position for the remainder of the 2025–2026 school year, with a contract renewal for the 2026–2027 school year.  Applications accepted until filled.

  • The New Mexico School for the Blind and Visually Impaired is seeking a School Psychologist.  This individual will conduct diagnostic evaluations, perform comprehensive psychological assessments, and provide written reports, to include scoring, to assist in the determination of eligibility for services. Attends IEPs to present diagnostic or psychological testing findings. Performs psychological/mental health consultation, as may be required. Psychologist will provide ongoing counseling services. Minimal state travel may be required. Postgraduate degree in school psychology, and valid NM Public Education Department license required.  Previous experience with visual impairments, special education and multiply impaired preferred.  Will be required to become Braille proficient.  This is a 9-month position at the NMSBVI campus in Alamogordo. Position available for the 2026-2027 school year.  Applications accepted until filled.

     

  • Provides individual and group guidance, relative to developing independent life skills and post-graduation preparedness for blind, visually – or multiple impaired students.  Provides intense instruction in all areas of daily living, career readiness and Expanded Core Curriculum. Acts as a job coach to secure employment and provides job coaching for students on-campus and in community.  High School diploma/GED and NM Public Education Department Level 3 licensure will be required.  Background/experience in working with visual/multiply-impaired students, job coaching and/or woodworking skills are preferred.  Will be required to become Braille proficient.  May be required to obtain certification in supported employment. Full-time, 9-month position for the 2026-2027 school year.  Applications accepted until filled.    

     

  • The Music Teacher will plan and implement musical instruction for students who are visually impaired, including those with multiple impairments. Goals include helping a diverse population of students to learn music appreciation, vocal performance and/or learning to play musical instruments. Teacher is responsible for providing musical experiences that enhance academic learning, coordinating performances and maintaining classroom instruments.  The Music Therapist will be responsible for implementing therapeutic music interventions to address physical, psychological, cognitive, behavior and/or social functioning needs to students.  Must have current or be eligible for a New Mexico PED Licensure in music; Special Education and background/experience in teaching students with visual impairments preferred.  Will be required to become Braille proficient.  Full-time, 9-month certified position for the 2026-2027 school year.  Applications accepted until filled.

  • The New Mexico School for the Blind and Visually Impaired is seeking applicants for the position of General Maintenance Technician/Groundskeeper. The selected candidate will be responsible for performing various aspects of facility maintenance and repair tasks, moving and lifting of furniture and equipment, maintenance of the swimming pool, and various groundskeeping duties. Plumbing experience preferred. Candidates should possess four to five years of relevant experience in a related field.  This is a 12-month, hourly position.  Applications will be considered until the position is filled.

  • The New Mexico School for the Blind and Visually Impaired is currently recruiting for an Independent Living Skills Instructor.  Duties include the ability to provide independent living skills instruction and career development to secondary students with visual impairments.  Bachelor’s degree or higher is required in one of the following: Visual Impairments, Family and Consumer Science or Career/Technical/Vocational. Certification in vision is preferred but can be acquired after hire. Must possess or be eligible for NM Public Education Department licensure.  Will be required to become Braille proficient.  Full‑time, 9-month contract for the 25-26 school year.  Applications accepted until filled.

  • New Mexico School for the Blind and Visually Impaired (NMSBVI) is currently recruiting a Certified Orientation and Mobility Specialist (COMS) to assist blind and visually impaired students achieve their greatest level of independence. Requirements include a Bachelor’s degree or higher, current ACVREP certification, and eligibility for O&M licensure from the New Mexico Public Education Department (PED). This is a full-time, 9-month position working on a residential campus with students ages 3-21, some of whom have multiple disabilities. Position available for the 26-27 school year.   • The New Mexico School for the Blind and Visually Impaired is seeking an Itinerant and Mentor TSVI. The Itinerant and Mentor TSVI will provide instructional support to the Instruction Department and area school districts, by providing direct services to students with visual impairments within the local area districts to NMSBVI Main Campus. Duties will also include student assessment, support to districts in developing and participating in IEP meetings, direct service, and consultation and support to district teachers and related services providers to include triannual evaluation considerations.  The Itinerant and Mentor TSVI will also provide mentoring supports to TSVIs on NMSBVI Main Campus, to include ensuring alignment with emerging best practices, innovative ideas and new technologies, developing and providing professional development opportunities, and supporting staff in completion of functional vision assessments and learning media assessments.   Bachelor’s Degree or higher, degree/certification as a Teacher of Students with Visual Impairments. Three years working as a Teacher of Students with Visual Impairments required.  Valid NM Public Education Department license required.  Previous experience with special education and multiply impaired preferred. This is a 9-month position.  Position available for the 2026-2027 school year.  Applications accepted until filled.

     

  • Education Substitutes assist students who are blind/visually impaired with instructional tasks in classroom.  Substitutes are on an “as-needed” and “on-call” basis.

  • The New Mexico School for the Blind and Visually Impaired is currently recruiting for Registered Nurse, Substitutes.  These individuals plan and implement health care services to visually and/or multiply impaired students.  The ability to demonstrate current knowledge in professional issues in school nursing, school and community health, communicable disease control, health assessment, acute and chronic health conditions, injury prevention and emergency care, student issues, and legal/ethical health policies.  New Mexico Board of Nursing Multicompact Licensure is required, eligible for certification from the New Mexico Public Education Department and a minimum of two years’ experience, preferably in pediatrics.  Work schedule is Sunday –Friday, as well as occasional weekends and/or out of state travel when necessary.  As a substitute will be on an as needed basis.   Applications accepted until filled.

  • The New Mexico School for the Blind and Visually Impaired is seeking a Physical Therapist to provide services for children who are blind/visually impaired and who may also have multiple impairments. Services are provided in conjunction with the educational team.  Master’s degree or higher required, must be eligible for New Mexico licensure. Prior experience with services for school-age children is preferred. This is a 9-month full-time position. Available immediately and open until filled.

  • Performs instructional tasks in classroom to assist licensed teaching staff.  High School diploma/GED and NM Public Education Department Level 3 licensure will be required.  Background/experience in working with visual/multiply-impaired students is preferred.  Full-time position will be required to become Braille proficient.  Full-time, 9-month position for the 2024-2025 school year.  Applications accepted until filled. 

  • The New Mexico School for the Blind and Visually Impaired is currently recruiting a part-time evening Residential Life Assistant.  Will be required to provide individual and group guidance services related to scholastic, educational, personal hygiene and social skill development to students who are blind/visually impaired, with/without other impairments.  Part-time nine-month evening position: 3:30 pm to 9:30 pm.  Applications accepted until filled.

  • The New Mexico School for the Blind and Visually Impaired is currently recruiting for a Special Education Teacher. This successful individual will have the flexibility in background and training to provide a comprehensive educational program to special education students with visual impairments, and/or multiple disabilities.  Experience with special education school-aged students is required.  Bachelor’s degree or higher in Special Education is required.  Must possess or be eligible for NM Public Education Department licensure. Blind and Visually Impaired licensure is preferred or willing to acquire.  Will be required to become Braille proficient.  Full‑time, 9-month contract.  Position open until filled.

     

Early Childhood Program - Albuquerque Campus

  • The New Mexico School for the Blind and Visually Impaired Early Childhood Program is seeking an experienced and qualified teacher of the visually impaired (TVI) for our site-based preschool and kindergarten program in Albuquerque.  Early Childhood experience is required.  BA is required.  Either a Special Education or Pre-K teacher license is required.  TVI licensure is preferred or willing to acquire one is required.  Teacher would be responsible for teaching, assessing and monitoring a classroom of VI and/or multiply impaired students.  Will be required to become Braille proficient.  Full‑time, 9-month contract for the 2026-2027 school year.  Applications accepted until filled.

  • The New Mexico School for the Blind and Visually Impaired Early Childhood Program is currently recruiting for a RN/LPN Substitute and/or a one day per week (Friday) RN position, in Albuquerque.  For the 2025-2026 school year.  This position will provide health care services to visually and/or multiply impaired students in an educational pre-school setting.  New Mexico Board of Nursing Licensure is required, and must hold or obtain NM Public Education Department licensure; minimum of two years experience, preferably in pediatrics.  9‑month contract.  Applications accepted until filled.

Birth to Three

  • The New Mexico School for the Blind and Visually Impaired is recruiting for a highly organized and detail-oriented Administrative Assistant to support the Family Infant Toddler Program. This individual will be responsible for managing digital student records, performing database entry, maintaining accurate recordkeeping, processing purchase requisitions, tracking budgets, and collaborating with school personnel across departments. The ideal candidate will demonstrate strong organizational and data management skills, with proficiency in Microsoft Office applications, including Access, Excel, Word, and PowerPoint, as well as Adobe software. Experience coordinating and maintaining databases within a large organization is essential. Excellent communication and interpersonal skills are required. Fluency in Spanish is preferred.

    This is a full-time, 12-month position. A high school diploma or GED is required; a bachelor’s degree is preferred. Candidates should have 4–6 years of related experience, preferably in an educational setting.  Applications will be accepted until the position is filled.
