Education Substitutes
Education Substitutes assist students who are blind/visually impaired with instructional tasks in classroom. Substitutes are on an “as-needed” and “on-call” basis.
Teacher for the Visually Impaired
The New Mexico School for the Blind and Visually Impaired is currently recruiting for a Teacher for the Visually Impaired as a Braille Instructor. This successful individual will have the flexibility in background and training to provide a comprehensive educational program to all grade level students with visual impairments, and multiple disabilities. Must hold Teacher of the Visually Impaired certification, and must possess or be eligible for NM Public Education Department licensure. Endorsement in Language Arts is preferred. Will be required to maintain Braille proficiency. Full‑time, 9-month contract for the 2024-2025 school year. This is an in person position for the Alamogordo campus. Position open until filled.
Registered Nurse, Substitutes
The New Mexico School for the Blind and Visually Impaired is currently recruiting for Registered Nurse, Substitutes. These individuals plan and implement health care services to visually and/or multiply impaired students. The ability to demonstrate current knowledge in professional issues in school nursing, school and community health, communicable disease control, health assessment, acute and chronic health conditions, injury prevention and emergency care, student issues, and legal/ethical health policies. New Mexico Board of Nursing Multicompact Licensure is required, eligible for certification from the New Mexico Public Education Department and a minimum of two years’ experience, preferably in pediatrics. Work schedule is Sunday –Friday, as well as occasional weekends and/or out of state travel when necessary. As a substitute will be on an as needed basis. Applications accepted until filled.
Drivers/Caregivers, Part-time
Drivers/Caregivers with background/experience in transporting or working with children with visual impairments and/or multiple disabilities is preferred. Required to assist with self-help routines with students. Driving will include local and statewide travel as well as occasional out of state travel. CDL with school bus and passenger endorsement preferred but not required. Good driving record required. These are 9-month part-time positions with extended runs on Fridays and Sundays, with some short runs during weekdays. Applications accepted until filled.
Special Education Teacher
The New Mexico School for the Blind and Visually Impaired is currently recruiting for a Special Education Teacher. This successful individual will have the flexibility in background and training to provide a comprehensive educational program to special education students with visual impairments, and/or multiple disabilities. Experience with special education school-aged students is required. Bachelor’s degree or higher in Special Education is required. Must possess or be eligible for NM Public Education Department licensure. Blind and Visually Impaired licensure is preferred or willing to acquire. Will be required to become Braille proficient. Full‑time, 9-month contract. Position open until filled.
Classroom Teacher
The New Mexico School for the Blind and Visually Impaired is currently recruiting for a Classroom Teacher. This successful individual will have the flexibility in background and training to provide a comprehensive educational program to elementary students with visual impairments, and/or multiple disabilities. Experience with elementary school-aged students is required. Bachelor’s degree or higher in Special Education is required and/or Elementary Education preferred. Certification in Vision is preferred but can be acquired after hire. Must possess or be eligible for NM Public Education Department licensure. Will be required to become Braille proficient. Full‑time, 9-month contract for the 25-26 school year. Position open until filled.
Residential Life Assistants
The New Mexico School for the Blind and Visually Impaired is currently recruiting a part-time graveyard, part-time evening and full-time evening Residential Life Assistants. Will be required to provide individual and group guidance services related to scholastic, educational, personal hygiene and social skill development to students who are blind/visually impaired, with/without other impairments. Part-time nine-month graveyard position: 1:15 am to 7:15 am. Part-time nine-month evening position: 3:30 pm to 9:30 pm. Full-time nine-month evening position: 3:30 pm to 11:30 pm. Graveyard shift provides vigilant supervision and assists with morning hygiene. Part-time and full-time evening shifts will be required to become Braille proficient. Must remain awake for all shifts. Administrative Assistant to Personnel Prep Program
The New Mexico School for the Blind and Visually Impaired is recruiting an Administrative Assistant. This individual provides administrative support to the NMSU TVI and O&M Personnel Preparation Programs (PPP), including transporting the adjunct faculty to observations and meetings throughout the state. Responsible for coordinating activities related to the program and with NMSBVI mentors, assists with the admissions process, reviewing reports and other data necessary to meet program objectives. Is responsible for the maintenance of multiple files and databases and the transmission of routing and confidential correspondence. High school diploma or GED required and two years related experience and/or training. Full-time, 12‑month position. Applications accepted until filled.
School Psychologist
The New Mexico School for the Blind and Visually Impaired is seeking a School Psychologist. This individual will conduct diagnostic evaluations and determine eligibility for services. Will perform comprehensive psychological assessments and determination of counseling services. Provides written reports, to include scoring, on each assessment. Performs psychological/mental health consultation, as may be required, to include attendance at IEP’s to present diagnostic or psychological testing findings. Psychologist will provide ongoing counseling and diagnostic services. Minimal state travel may be required. Postgraduate degree in school psychology, and valid NM Public Education Department license required. Previous experience with visual impairments, special education and multiply impaired preferred. Will be required to become Braille proficient. This is a 9-month position at the NMSBVI campus in Alamogordo. Position available for the 2025-2026 school year. Applications accepted until filled.
Albuquerque, Early Childhood Campus Opportunities
Occupational Therapist
The New Mexico School for the Blind and Visually Impaired Early Childhood Program is currently recruiting for an Occupational Therapist with sensory integration experience to provide services for young children who are blind/visually impaired. Prefer Occupational Therapist with experience in both early childhood and blindness. NM Board of Occupational Therapy license and licensure through the NM Public Education Department are required. Statewide Opportunities
Outreach Itinerant/Mentor
New Mexico School for the Blind and Visually Impaired Outreach Services Division is currently recruiting for an experienced Teacher of Students with Visual Impairments. This individual will provide mentoring opportunities to interns in the personnel preparation program as well as teachers newly hired to the state. Will act as a liaison between NMSBVI and school districts and as a resource to school districts that are establishing vision departments. Duties will also include student assessment, support to districts in developing and participating in IEP meetings, case load evaluations, and training. Direct services may be assigned as needed. Required to travel within the state. Licensure as a TSVI is required. Itinerant/Mentor also provides training, resources, consultation and support to TSVIs in school districts throughout the state of New Mexico.
This is a 183 day contract and covers the full school year. Must be eligible for certification in New Mexico and must meet NMSBVI’s Braille proficiency requirement. Family, Infant, Toddler Program
Developmental Vision Specialist
The New Mexico School for the Blind and Visually Impaired Infant Toddler Program is seeking a Developmental Vision Specialist. This position will serve the Metro (Albuquerque) and Northwest area of New Mexico with travel to other parts of the state as needed.
Must be eligible for a Developmental Specialist II or III license with the New Mexico FIT Program. Must have a BA/BS or higher in Early Childhood, or related field. This position requires continuing education and enrollment in and completion of the Visual Impairment Program (VIP) at NMSU. This position will require training to become proficient in Braille.
This individual will provide early intervention services in home and community settings that support young children 0-3 years old with or at risk for visual impairments. This includes collaboration with Early Intervention and Early Childhood agencies. A valid driver’s license is a requirement, as driving and travel are part of this position. Prefer experience in early intervention/home-visiting and experience working with young children who are blind or visually impaired. Applications accepted until filled.
