Education Substitutes

Education Substitutes assist students who are blind/visually impaired with instructional tasks in classroom.  Substitutes are on an “as-needed” and “on-call” basis.

 

Teacher for the Visually Impaired

The New Mexico School for the Blind and Visually Impaired is currently recruiting for a Teacher for the Visually Impaired as a Braille Instructor. This successful individual will have the flexibility in background and training to provide a comprehensive educational program to all grade level students with visual impairments, and multiple disabilities.  Must hold Teacher of the Visually Impaired certification, and must possess or be eligible for NM Public Education Department licensure. Endorsement in Language Arts is preferred. Will be required to maintain Braille proficiency. Full‑time, 9-month contract for the 2024-2025 school year.  This is an in person position for the Alamogordo campus.  Position open until filled.  

 

Registered Nurse, Substitutes

The New Mexico School for the Blind and Visually Impaired is currently recruiting for Registered Nurse, Substitutes.  These individuals plan and implement health care services to visually and/or multiply impaired students.  The ability to demonstrate current knowledge in professional issues in school nursing, school and community health, communicable disease control, health assessment, acute and chronic health conditions, injury prevention and emergency care, student issues, and legal/ethical health policies.  New Mexico Board of Nursing Multicompact Licensure is required, eligible for certification from the New Mexico Public Education Department and a minimum of two years’ experience, preferably in pediatrics.  Work schedule is Sunday –Friday, as well as occasional weekends and/or out of state travel when necessary.  As a substitute will be on an as needed basis.   Applications accepted until filled.

 

Certified Orientation and Mobility Specialist

New Mexico School for the Blind and Visually Impaired (NMSBVI) is interested in hiring a Certified Orientation and Mobility Specialist (COMS) to assist blind and visually impaired students achieve their greatest level of independence. Requirements include a Bachelor’s degree or higher, current ACVREP certification, and eligibility for O&M licensure from the New Mexico Public Education Department (PED). This is a full-time, 9-month position working on a residential campus with students ages 3-21, some of whom have multiple disabilities. Position available for the 24-25 school year.  This is an in person position for the Alamogordo campus.  Applications will be accepted until filled

 

Transition Services Coordinator

Duties include the ability to provide individualized and/or group services in developing transition plans to include career development, employment preparation, self-determination development, vocational assessment, accessing statewide resources, and integration in the workplace community to students Pre-K to 12 with visual impairments and multiple disabilities.  Master’s degree in related areas such as special education teaching, counseling, vocational rehabilitation, etc.  Training or experience in special education, with school to work initiatives and/or with the blind and visually impaired student population, is preferred.  NM Public Education Department licensure required.  Will be required to become Braille proficient, visual impairment coursework may be required.  Full‑time position for the 2024-2025 school year.  This is an in person position for the Alamogordo campus.  Applications accepted until filled. 

 

Classroom Teacher

The New Mexico School for the Blind and Visually Impaired is currently recruiting for a Classroom Teacher. This successful individual will have the flexibility in background and training to provide a comprehensive educational program to elementary students with visual impairments, and/or multiple disabilities.  Experience with elementary school-aged students is required.  Bachelor’s degree or higher in Special Education is required and/or Elementary Education preferred. Certification in Vision is preferred but can be acquired after hire. Must possess or be eligible for NM Public Education Department licensure. Will be required to become Braille proficient.  Full‑time, 9-month position for the 2024-2025 school year.  This is an in person position for the Alamogordo campus.  Position open until filled.

 

Special Education Director/IEP and Testing Specialist

The New Mexico School for the Blind and Visually Impaired is currently recruiting for a Special Education Director/IEP and Testing Specialist.  This individual will facilitate educational programming through student’s IEP for students currently attending the residential campus or served by NMSBVI. Collaborates and coordinates with the Early Childhood Program around IEP’s, goals, and Special Education requirements in order to ensure consistency between campuses and within programs on each campus.  Assists instructional administration with district testing, local and state level, while maintaining student’s scores on district software, spreadsheets and reporting to the public education department.  Serves as expert in Special Education Law and State and Federal requirements.  Master’s degree in special education or related field and a minimum of five years’ experience providing services to special education students in the classroom.  Must have a thorough understanding of IDEA-B law and hold a level 3 New Mexico Teaching license.  New Mexico Administrative licensure preferred.  Must become Braille proficient and be willing to acquire license as a teacher of students with visual impairments or take related coursework.

 

Secondary Math Instructor

The New Mexico School for the Blind and Visually Impaired is currently looking for a highly qualified secondary Math Instructor. The successful candidate will provide math instruction using the common core standards to students, grades 6-12. Instruction includes remediation of math deficiencies as well as implementation of educational practices specific to blindness. Bachelor’s degree or higher with an endorsement in mathematics is required. The successful candidate must become licensed as a teacher of the visually impaired; must possess or be eligible for NM Public Education Department licensure in secondary math.  Will be required to become Braille proficient.  Full‑time, 9-month contract for the 2024-2025 school year.  Applications accepted until filled.

 

Albuquerque, Early Childhood Campus Opportunities

 

 

Occupational Therapist

The New Mexico School for the Blind and Visually Impaired Early Childhood Program is currently recruiting for an Occupational Therapist with sensory integration experience to provide services for young children who are blind/visually impaired.  Prefer Occupational Therapist with experience in both early childhood and blindness.  NM Board of Occupational Therapy license and licensure through the NM Public Education Department are required.  This is a half-time, 9-month contract position for the 2024-2025 school year.  Applications accepted until filled.

 

Education Assistant

The New Mexico School for the Blind and Visually Impaired Early Childhood Program is seeking an Education Assistant.  Background/experience in working with visual/multiply-impaired students is preferred.  HS diploma/GED and NM Public Education Department licensure will be required.  Will be required to become Braille proficient.  This is a 9-month position. Substitute Teacher

The New Mexico School for the Blind and Visually Impaired Early Childhood Program is seeking Substitute Teachers.  Substitutes work in the classroom with students and support instructional learning.  Substitutes are on an “as-needed” and “on-call” basis.  Looking for someone to fill the position for the 2023-2024 school year. 

 

Driver/Caregiver, Substitute

The New Mexico School for the Blind and Visually Impaired is recruiting for a substitute Driver/Caregiver. Background/experience in transporting or working with children with visual impairments and/or multiple disabilities is preferred. Required to assist with self-help routines with students. Driving will include routes to Gallup and Farmington on weekends. Good driving record required. This is a 9 month substitute position with extended runs on Fridays and Sundays and occasional Mondays. Registered Nurse, Substitute

The New Mexico School for the Blind and Visually Impaired Early Childhood Program is currently recruiting for a RN Substitute, in Albuquerque.  This position will provide health care services to visually and/or multiply impaired students in an educational pre-school setting.  New Mexico Board of Nursing Licensure is required, and eligibility for NM Public Education Department licensure; minimum of two years experience, preferably in pediatrics.  9‑month contract.  Applications accepted until filled.

Family, Infant, Toddler Program

 

Developmental Vision Specialist

The New Mexico School for the Blind and Visually Impaired Infant Toddler Program is seeking a Developmental Vision Specialist. This position will serve Northwest NM and Metro (Albuquerque area) with travel to other areas of the state as needed.

Must be eligible for a Developmental Specialist II or III license with the New Mexico FIT Program. Must have a BA/BS or higher in Early Childhood, or related field. This position requires continuing education and enrollment in and completion of the Visual Impairment Program (VIP) at NMSU. This position will require training to become proficient in Braille.

This individual will provide early intervention services in home and community settings that support young children 0-3 years old with or at risk for visual impairments. This includes collaboration with Early Intervention and Early Childhood agencies. A valid driver’s license is a requirement, as driving and travel are part of this position. Prefer experience in early intervention/home-visiting and experience working with young children who are blind or visually impaired.  Applications accepted until filled.
