Library Selection Week 1
This week we are reading the story “To Build a Fire” by American novelist Jack London. It is set in the late 1890s in the deadly cold of the Yukon Wilderness and is a story of a man’s perilous journey. Below are links to the print version of the story and the audio version of the story. The print version is about sixteen pages and the audio takes about forty minutes.

This week we are reading the story The Necklace by Guy de Maupassant. It is set in Paris in 1880s and is a story of discontent, class envy, greed, and deception. This week we are reading the story “The Most Dangerous Game” by American author and journalist Richard Connell. It is set in the 1920s in the jungles of the Carribean and is a story of a man’s survival in a dangerous and unusual situation. The story is inspired by the big-game hunting safaris in Africa and South America that were particularly fashionable among wealthy Americans in the 1920s.

This week we will be reading “The Monkey’s Paw” by W. W. Jacobs. It was first published in 1902 and the story is set around that time in England. “The Monkey’s Paw” is a horror story and a cautionary tale about unintended consequences. This week we are reading “The Open Window” by Saki. It is a tale of unexpected revelations set in England in the early 1900s. Below are links to the print version of the story and the audio version of the story. The print version is about two pages and the audio takes about eight minutes. Below the story links are a short history of Edwardian England and a brief biography of the author, H. H. Munro, who used the pen name Saki. There are also some questions to consider after reading the story.
